History
The motor coaches were designed for passenger and express train service on mainlines and featured a hydrodynamic transmission. They were manufactured by Vagonka Tatra Studénka between 1968 and 1970, with 35 units of Class M296.1 built for international transport (Vindobona service) and 25 units of Class M296.2 designated for domestic operations.
Later, all units were integrated into passenger transport in Czechoslovakia, with the option to couple 1–2 lightweight Bam-series passenger cars.
